My wife has decided she would like to learn to throw knives...I am still not sure how I feel about this.
Anyway- that would mean I need to get her a set of knives. Best that they be dull and light I figure (under 200 g)- anyway throw and have recommendations for a beginner?

i have messed around a little bit with throwing knives. im no good at it though lol.

i have a set of small, light ones and a set of bigger, heavier ones. the bigger, heavier ones are a whole lot easier to use so i would recommend not going for small ones at first. i dont know how much any of them weigh. i go to gun expos regularly and there are always knife vendors there so i just bought my throwing knives from them.


PS. throwing stars are easier and more fun.

That's the thing- she is really after the knives. I got a tomahawk at a big black powder shoot a friend does on her property and I was messing around with it...she saw it, gave it a few throws and loved it. Now she wants the knives even though yep, stars are a lot easier (I remember from my school days they took little practice at all). I kind of figured heavier was better- looking at about 200 grams I think.
COuld you tell me how long the bigger set you have is?

sorry. i missed your reply in this. i just measured my small set and they are 6 inches. my big set is out in the barn so i cant measure them right now but im going to guess they are around 10 inches.

personally why I do not have much experience throwing knives I would highly recommend getting her a nicer knife. I have throwing knives, cheap pot metal, 20 dollar throwing knives. I know for a fact that if I had a more precision knife I would have a lot more fun learning to throw them.

P.S: try a balisong, she may like that too.

I used to throw knives when I was younger. My knife set was a gift so I didn't really have any say in what knives I got, but I would definitely suggest getting something of reasonable quality and made for throwing(look into that, because there are many knives out there that look like throwing knives but are not properly weighted for it). Also a rule I like to follow is never mess with dull knives(I have to explain this to my friends in great detail when they start talking about getting their sons their first pocket knives), a dull knife is almost always more dangerous than a sharp one(although throwing knives less so).

I've been throwing knives since I was ten or so and I would say to start with throwing axes. The biggest part is estimating how many rotations the knife or ax will make before it hits it's target.

I knew they had obscenely terrible gun laws.
Seems strange they'd make a type of knife illegal.

I forgot most of the laws but it involves balisongs. If the blade of the balisong is longer than 2 1/2 inches, it's illegal. One day I went into a weapons store and they were selling balisongs with a 2 1/2 inch live blade and 6 inch covers/handle, it looked really weird. Trainer balisongs are legal though. I have a bottle opener balisong that I use for opening sparkling cider and I've used it for an Eskrima form in a competition.

Here are a few other California weapon laws: nunchucks, sword canes, shuriken, knuckles and belt swords/knives are all illegal.

^ I think it's the same in NY. I had nunchaku, throwing stars, balisongs, throwing knives and any and all sort of martial arts weapons when I was younger. I've apparently lost them all through the ages. Need to get some new shurukins one of these days. So much fun.
