My other hobby besides yoyos is keeping pet guinea pigs. I have a photo blog for them, if you have a minute check it out. www.cavies.tumblr.com

Where can you by some of these flashlights? Love that luce de notte!

Hey Stephosh,

The Luce was made by Fred Pilon, whose company is called PhotonFanatic. You can contact him via his website (http://www.photonfanatic.com), or through http://www.candlepowerforums.com - a huge (and somewhat intimidating) forum dedicated to flashlights! (yes, a flashlight forum!) Fred has his own online subforum on CPF. He's a terrific guy who almost only does 100% custom work, though he does do the occasional really small runs of his lights.

All the rest of the lights are made by other various custom light makers, all of whom are on CPF.
-Top three pictures are all PhotonFanatic
-Middle picture are all made by a CPF'r named TranquillityBase (also a buddy and an awesome guy)
-Bottom picture is made by CPF'r named "Data"

Enjoy!

john

Thanks John for the info. I think I found a new hobby!!! LOL

Wow, that's one hell of an answer! Had to read everything nice and slowly to comprehend it all (or at least as much as I can hope to), but truly a fascinating read.

:o That's awesome!! Mmmmmmm.... Martins.........

I have a 1928 0-18K (Koa) Martin that was converted from Hawaiian slide to a regular fretted guitar (nylon string!), which is my 100% most favorite material thing in the world.

I can't believe I left my latest obsession out of my original post, I've recently started dabbling in charcuterie. So far I've got some cured bacon, a duck prosciutto, and pancetta under my belt!

I just pulled the trigger on some new toys for my EDC kit the other day. A Spyderco Caly 3 with carbon fiber scales, a 4sevens Quark 123 R5 version flashlight to see what I'm cutting, and a Spyderco Sharpmaker kit to keep all the pocketknives, fixed tacticals, and kitchen cutlery as sharp as possible. Yes, I like knives too and have for most of my life off and on, carrying a variety of folders and a trusty Victorinox Camper through most of my creepy neighborhood secret spy kid years. No one was safe. ;)

New toy for me, a Belgian Coticule, it's a natural razor hone glued to a piece of slate for strength. Being a natural stone, it's hard to put an exact grit rating on it, most run around 8,000 to 10,000 with just straight water but when used with a slurry stone most will cut more like a 1,000 to 3,000 grit stone making these a very unique sharpening stone. Mine is a VERY slow cutting but extremely high grit example, based of other hones I have used I would say this one is somewhere around 12,000 to 14,000 grit. Lets just say my razors are now scary sharp :D .

Before I got into yoyos I was really into straight razor collecting/shaving, I don't collect razors any more but I still like to shave with them. I still need to get a new hone, and a few more razors would be nice :P

I'm also into video games, but I haven't been gaming too much since I got into yoyoing, but it's definitely part of who I am.

Finally I'm big on motorcycles, I'm saving up to buy my first bike, an SV650, I've got the license and most of the gear purchased already. Maybe around tax season I'll have enough for a down payment.

Thought I'd be the only one to say I'm into Straight Razor/safety razor shaving. My other hobbies are longboarding and ukuleles.

Outlaw I may have to get a hold of you when I have a bit more money, I have a Wade & Butcher and a Red Injun that could use a little TLC. :)

Do you hone them when you're done restoring them? If so with what? My next straight purchase is probably going to be a BBW/Coticule whetstone.

Go to SRP and find me, I'm ThePhill over there. You can get by with just a coticule(my stone of choice, followed by CromOx and CermOx) or even a Chinese 12K as a finisher. The Belgian Blue is pretty much a waste of time when using a coticule with a slurry stone. Now I just need Shawn to post some pics of the work I've done for him and you can see a lot more of my work on Straight Razor Place.

I added you on SRP. hope you don't mind

You guys have me wanting a straight razor now. What is a good one to start learning honing and sharpening on? Is there a cheapish starter kit?

Check out a whipped dog set. inexpensive but has everything you NEED. Than go from there :)

Ryan,

What kinda uke do you play? (and do you have one with you in Afghanistan?)

I have built my own soprano, and am currently working on a tenor-sized koa, but my workhorse, until I get good enough at making them, is a KoAloha Concert Pikake:

John,
I have a Lanikai Natural Koa Tenor (nk-t). It sounds amazing! I don't have it with me here in Afghanistan. :( I didn't have a hard case to put it in so I didn't bring it. I wish I would have now though... I had a Lanikai spruce top but sold it because I didn't like the tone at all and so I never played it. I also had a LU-21T that I gave to my friend to teach him.
Do you have any pictures posted of your projects? I think that is so cool!

I just recently came into traditional shaving when I came out here. I should be getting this at some point. It needs to be honed though. It's a near wedge and I've never honed before...
As long as I tape it a few times on the spine it should be too difficult right?

NICE! I've heard good things about those... such an awesome instrument!

No pics of my projects... I dunno why! Maybe because I'm still a total noob at luthiery. :) I'm doing everything by hand, as we live in a small place in Chicago. My "workshop" looks suspiciously similar to a dining room table.
