Post I think something is up with my MN
Something is not right with my MN. I guess I haven't been throwing a whole lot, but recently I've noticed that my MN tilts and turns a lot. On a strong and straight throw, the yoyo will turn 30-45 degrees clockwise, pretty much every time. When I throw a trapeze, within 5-10 seconds, it tilts itself off.

This is very frustrating, and it's definitely not anything I've experienced. On a straight throw-down, I've experienced tilting, yes, but the yoyo turning like a minute hand on a clock? Never before. It makes learning tricks hard, because the yoyo loses its angular momentum quickly because it's changing it's turning itself...

Any ideas? Maybe I need to get this checked

Is the bearing clean and free spinning? Is the bearing seat on both yoyo halves clean? Is the bearing seriously tight on one of the bearing posts? Is your string loop very worn? Is the yoyo properly tightened when screwed together, or is it too loose or too tight? Have you banged the yoyo really hard and possibly bent the axle at some poin/t

Let's get a little more information from you then we can help diagnose the problem.

Everything you've listed seems to be okay, though one of the bearing seats might be too tight. The side that doesn't have the axle is tight, and I'm not sure if it was always like that...

I did hit the ground once (carpeted) while throwing it, but it wasn't any major smack

I'm at the library now, but when I get home I'll see what's up with the bearing seat. I mean, if it were the bearing seat's problem, is there anything I can do about it? I might try to throw in another bearing just to see what happens.

Thanks for the help

All yo-yos precess. It's counteracted naturally during play.

Can you make a video showing it?

I will do so when I go back home.

Thanks!

There are three vids on my channel showing the problem.

I took out the bearing twice or so and put it back in (maybe it loosened up the bearing seat?) and the problem seems to persist less, or that's what I'm imagining. But either way, its still a problem if it happens, and hopefully there's something I can do to fix it..

Thanks!

Thanks for making the videos.

Looks like the normal amount of precession to me. On the trapeze you will correcting for it while you play. You never just throw a straight sleeper and let it hang there so there is nothing to correct there.

It seems fine, but say, well, I'm learning the Black Hops right now, and I need a decent amount of time to time it and prep before another hop. But Often times, it will tilt so much where I have to end the trick early.

Maybe i'll take the bearing out and put it back in, and hopefully loosen up the seat?

Thanks.

or, perhaps my problem is that i'm not throwing hard enough...

Seat tightness would have no impact on this. If you think you have a bad bearing I'm happy to send you another to try. Email me your shipping address:

Ah, thanks a lot David, but it should be fine. I've tried some other bearings, but there still is a bit tilt.

I'll just not be so nitpicky, throw more and harder, and I don't think there should be any problem.

Thanks! I guess my not being on the swim team this year has weakened my arm... time to do push-ups!

Happy new year!

You'll get better, just let it happen naturally. No need to force it. ;)

QFT. Even the pro's yoyo's tip ;) - Just natural rotation.

If the throw is good and the string is perfectly aligned so that no component of torque is applied perpendicular to the axis of angular momentum, you will not have any precession! That's how we roll in Area 51!

This why the sleep record people hold the string right above the yoyo and twist it back and forth to keep it from rotating.

nice, thanks a lot for the different angles of approach/explanation.

Haha, I plan on declaring in Physics, better brush up on that mech... Took E&M last semester, not so fun (I want to dig deeper into acoustics or nanotech, pretty diff from each other, but they're both interesting... we'll see)

And now I'm veering off the subject.

Ciao
