Post Re: Worlds 2013 in Prague
By forcing the community to make a choice like this we all lose.

I am all for moving Worlds around, even though it's not my decision.

But to steal the name and date is zero class and just will divide the community so neither will be what it could be.

I can think of examples like this in business, sports and academia. No one wins unless there is a very clear sound choice. In this situation, there clearly is not, so we all lose.

I see a lot of ego, impatience, bullheadedness, and ego. Did I mention ego?

We all lose unless compromise can be reached.

Ego I don't know, but impatience... you can be sure not at all.

Back on topic, Worlds shouldn't be changing. That is what a lot of the people here are saying. Add a second contest, make it the end all be all contest that all players want to win. Worlds as it stands has quite a bit of history and tradition around it. Leave it be. When Chris Allen brought back Cal. States he didn't try to make it the new PNWR contest, he built up the best contest he could and added more to the community as well as making the hobby more visible. He has done a great job and I commend him for it. We need more of this type of thinking and less trying to force a move, that to put it bluntly, is just plain silly to do.

I agree. Worlds is great at what it does and gives something positive to the yoyo world. I'm all for other international contests happening but setting this up as a "this vs that" is divisive and unneeded - all it does it serve to dilute both events and create friction in the community.

In general, people are hung up on the name. What's behind a contest is more important than the name. Just because it is called "World YoYo Contest" doesn't mean it defines the world champion. Look at tennis. The most cherished event to win is called "Wimbledon". Both Tennis and golf have 4 majors. The more contests, the better for all of us I say.

Another point I'd like to make is that it seems those who ran EYYC are apparently going to be running this.

Here is my experience as a manufacturer who sponsored EYYC. Normally for big events we donate some amount of product and some amount of cash. Most events hold an auction to turn the product into cash (Chris Allen generated huge amounts of prize money doing this for Cal States). In the case of EYYC I was told that they were not accepting product - cash was the only way to sponsor. They went on to say that top players don't need more yoyos and that they prefer cash prizes. It was made clear to me that they were going to give cash prizes away. I sponsored in cash.

Plamek (on the One Drop team) ended up winning 1A at this event. He received one yoyo, a yoyo display stand and a trophy. He did not receive any cash. I emailed the organizers asking them what happened and the answer was that they did not receive enough money to be able to give away a cash prize.

So for those criticizing the large cash prizes given out at Worlds, this is something to think about.

Thats just despicable! I would imagine they instead lined their own pockets with it.....

I would imagine this will have many manufacturers second guessing their sponsorship of EYYC. I agree with Mack, that is despicable. Even if each winner received 20 Euro and some yo-yos, it would the principle of the matter. It was said money would be given and it should be.

He did say "I would imagine" but yeah the point is that they didn't make the numbers public so we have no idea what really happened and why a cash prize was not granted. I just thought this was an important thing for people to know about since the same people are proposing this contest and this is part of their contest running track record. They did put on a great contest from all accounts, but for the European Champion to not receive a cash prize is concerning especially when doing so was a stated goal and a negotiating point for sponsorship. I was also baffled that they refused to take product and do auctions and/or raffles.

My apologies for my missleading comment. I simply figured that to be a logical conclusion. But, let me make it clear that i DO NOT know that to be fact, i was merely speculating for the sake of conversation. my apologies again.

I heard YYF Ben pocketed all the EYYC money so that he could finally get that sex change operation that he wanted.

There Mack, feel better.

I read this thread daily, and while I do have some personal feelings on the matter, I only want to say one thing: If these events were at least a week apart, they'd both get my attendance and money. As it stands, I may not go to either one next year.

I agree, that thought crossed my mind as well. Some will be sad to HAVE to choose between one or the other, where otherwise they might have attended both.

LOL! :D
Makes me feel good Chris, real good.
Haha! But on a side note *Edit* i finally read the last page back and someone did finally bring up the "Ben Connection".
But there is scant mention, which is funny to me because as i understood it, Ben was in fact one of the main driving influences in this Anti-Worlds campaign. ;)

Although him and many players of YYF sort of pushed for it you have to consider other companies are backing it as well not just YYF

More rumors being spread. Surprise. Surprise.

Adios OD forum. It's been fun. But the anti-YYF commentary on this forum has become downright pathetic.

Worlds in Prague is a great news for me, it will be much cheaper to travel from Hungary! And imo the organizers thinking about that if people go to Orlando for Worlds probably they will not be able to flight over half of the world for an another Worlds in Prague . It's just too expensive for an average people.

And i saw a lots of comment about "this or that" on facebook. Some people really can't understand that : a european player have to pay 2200 USD to go Orlando for Worlds and the main point : an average family monthly income is : 530-580 USD (ok, it's for Hungary ) That's just too hard and expensive for a many people.

I agree with David and others it will be better if they call it " The greatest yoyo contest" or whatever...

I just hope that i will meet a lot of people in Prague and we will have FUN !

John I like you, please stop being so melodramatic. It doesn't suit you. My "sex change" comment was a complete joke.

Macks comments were not that far off. Ben did use the YYF Twitter to trash the contest this year. It isn't a stretch to consider them one of the driving forces behind the move when he makes comments like he did. He even went as far as to give all these "facts" about getting struck by lightening in Florida, posting links to the Prague WYYC2013 site, and giving "survival" phrases in Czech. Check it out for yourself they start on July 31st.

https://twitter.com/yoyofactory

My personal favorite was his ever so loving comments about the backdrop:
https://twitter.com/yoyofactory/status/ ... 57/photo/1

So let me respectfully ask, where is the rumor spreading in anything that I just posted?

The only reason YYF has so many rumors that follow it is because it has plenty of things people dont like about them that arent rumors.. they're facts -.- and this happens on plenty of other forums and on facebook
